Voyages
Bartolomeu dias took two voyages in his lifetime. His first voyage was sponsored by Portugal. He left for his first voyage in August 1487 and returned 16 months and 17 days later in December 1488. He took three ship on his voyage, including his own the São Cristóvão. While on his voyage, he sailed south out of sight of any land for months. Finally, on February 3rd he spotted land and named this area Angra de São Brás. The expedition then continued on. Soon many of the crew members became very unwilling to continue and wanted to return home. Dias took a vote of who was willing to continue. Dias and his crew decided to continue on for a few days. In these next few days, the weather was becoming bad and the currents were too strong so Dias decided to turn back. On his way back to Portugal, he spotted an area of land at the southern tip of Africa. He named this area the Cape of Storms, now a days known as the Cape of Good Hope. Little is known about the return home from his journey. He returned home to Portugal in December 1488. He took a second expedition with Pedro Cabral, but died when his ship was lost at sea.
