Bartolomeu Dias impacted society during the fourteenth century in many ways. Dias’s first voyage impacted Portugal most of all. After Dias’s first voyage Portugal gained a lot of control over Asia, they also created trading routes with India and Asia. Dias also influenced and inspired many other explorers to discover new trading routes. This lead to the discovery of new land, which impacted everyone. Dias also helped open the eyes of scientists and inventor, he inspired them to create new technology to make exploration more efficient. Dias proved that by sailing around Africa you could reach East Asia, this not only affected Portugal power and trade with Asia, but also influenced cartographers. With this new information cartographers could make their maps more accurate. Bartolomeu Dias did not really have an impact on any indigenous societies. Although he encountered the Khoikhoi, they threw rocks and stones at Dias’s ships and Dias and his men left. He made no encounter with any other indigenous people, therefore he had no impact on their life. Bartolomeu Dias also had an impact on the Columbian exchange. The columbian exchange is the trade between the Americas and Europe in the 15th and 16th centuries. Although Dias was dead years before the Columbian exchange began, he influenced Christopher Columbus who discovered the Americas. If Dias had never taken the voyage to the Cape of Good Hope, then he would not have inspired Christopher Columbus and the Americas may have never been found and the Columbian Exchange would have never existed.
